CRYOFAST Cryogenics R&D Project

CRYOFAST

Democratizing access to sub-Kelvin temperatures for quantum 2.0 technologies

CRYOFAST will make it simpler and more convenient for researchers and developers to access the very low temperatures needed for the development of quantum technologies.

As the quantum technology ecosystem grows, there is a clear need for professional testing and characterization services. CRYOFAST will address this need by providing a centralized facility for advanced cryogenic measurements on sensitive devices.

kiutra already has a state-of-the-art low-temperature characterization service, powered by cutting-edge cryostat hardware. We offer precise testing at an affordable rate, reducing test result times from weeks or months to just days. Our Cryogenics as a Service model also makes advanced testing accessible to startups, SMEs, and researchers who lack the capital or expertise to manage specialized low-temperature equipment.

The EIC Accelerator grant will enable us to expand our services to a broad range of companies in the quickly evolving quantum field. By providing integrated, rapid characterization and optimization services, we aim to accelerate the development of the first true commercial applications in the quantum space.

CRYOFAST Objectives

Empowering users with accessible, scalable cryogenic testing

To meet the challenging demands of quantum technology development, current limitations of cryogenic solutions must be overcome. For end-users, this means getting past technical constraints that slow their R&D, while for kiutra’s customers, it’s about finding an economically viable and scalable solution that supports their commercialization ambitions.

We see kiutra evolving beyond a provider of individual cooling systems to an integrated ecosystem of cryogenic solutions, with our Cryogenics as a Service (CaaS) model at its core. The service will transform quantum measurements by delivering unprecedented speed, automation and flexibility in cryogenic testing.

Our aim is to reduce testing times from weeks to days, thereby accelerating R&D timelines with quick test result turnarounds.

We will provide a range of measurements for the characterization of sensitive quantum devices and components, handling all necessary interfacing of electronics and software. Using our proven routines and experience will ensure optimal efficiency.

By eliminating the need for expensive in-house cryogenic testing facilities and expertise, CaaS opens up access to advanced cryogenic testing for a broader range of users. This will help small and medium-sized firms and foster a more diverse quantum ecosystem across the EU and beyond.

What’s more, the flexibility of the service allows customers to scale their testing needs affordably, ensuring they can adapt as their requirements grow without the burden of maintaining complex equipment or specialized knowledge.

CRYOFAST Impact

Cutting carbon emissions through shared cryostats and green energy

As our cryostats eliminate the need for helium-3, they address critical environmental and supply chain issues. Our novel CaaS solution represents a leap in cryogenic testing, addressing the profound limitations of existing options with a comprehensive service that creates new opportunities for customers and transforms the EU quantum technology ecosystem. Our cryogen-free technology provides a greener alternative to helium-based systems. Our L-Type Rapid cryostat saves GHG emissions by being energy-efficient and enabling faster testing with 6-10x better turnaround times. We have modeled the climate impact compared to cryogenic equipment on the market today.

The speed advantage of our L-Type Rapid cryostat can reduce energy use by up to 70% for a quick test (∼1 hour of testing time at 100 mK). This not only reduces costs significantly but also cuts carbon emissions by up to 8.5 tCO2eq per year and device.

By sharing cryostats among many CaaS users, we multiply this sustainability advantage dramatically. Further, our commitment to a CaaS test infrastructure running 100% on green electricity from hydropower plants cuts over 97% of CO2 emissions compared to the EU-28 electricity mix baseline in the use phase.
